The members and friends of the Japan Society join the world in expressing deepest condolences to the people of Japan on the loss of Former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe. He was a supporter and friend of the Japan-America Societies. Shinzo Abe served as the Honorary President of the America-Japan Society in Tokyo.

Below is an excerpt of the statement from Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki, President of the America-Japan Society, Inc., shared by the National Association of Japan America Societies.

“Our Honorary President Mr. Shinzo Abe was shot on the 8th of July and lost his life. Of course, such a thing should never have happened. He was the longest serving Prime Minister in the history of Japan. As Prime Minister, he strengthened Japan-US relations through national security legislation and the Free and Open Indo-Pacific strategy. He was one of the greatest leaders in our postwar history. We will all miss this shining star. May his soul rest peacefully in heaven.”

We join with our friends in Japan in sharing this loss and heartbreak. There will be Book of Condolence services across the Consulate-General offices across Canada. Please check with your local offices.
